Investment Markets
Markets in focus
The past year has been very disappointing on the financial markets. We’ve all suffered as local and international sharemarkets have endured heavy losses. This is the most severe and sustained downturn that any of us have experienced.
The effects of the economic downturn have been felt in all corners of the globe. No matter how prepared or experienced the investor, the global financial crisis hasn’t discriminated as 93 per cent of global stocks lost value last year.
Markets rise and fall
The recent past has reminded us that investment markets do rise and fall in value over time. This particular fall has been very dramatic. Despite these cycles, we shouldn't lose sight of our long-term goals, such as preparing for our retirement years.
Keeping your eye on the retirement ball
Making provision for your future should remain one of your most important priorities, market fluctuations notwithstanding. As Australians retire earlier and live longer, you could spend as many years in retirement as you did in the workforce. You still need to build a nest egg sufficient to enjoy a comfortable retirement.
Same rules still apply
Despite recent market turmoil, the fundamental principles of investing still apply – invest for the long-term, diversify your investments, benefit from tax-effective super and seek quality financial advice.
